What French looks like at St Laurence
At St Laurence Junior Academy, we provide a relevant and broad Modern Foreign Languages curriculum that inspires and excites our pupils using a wide variety of topics and themes. The language we teach is French and the five key language learning skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing and grammar are taught in an age-appropriate way. This enables pupils to use and apply their learning in a variety of contexts, laying down solid foundations for future language learning.
Following an interactive white-board-based scheme of work, we intend that all pupils develop a genuine interest and positive curiosity about foreign languages, finding them enjoyable and stimulating. Children are provided with the opportunity to explore relationships between language and identity and develop a deeper understanding of other cultures and the world around them.
All classes have access to a high-quality foreign language curriculum using the Rigolo scheme of work and resources, which is taught weekly for three terms of each year.
Children progressively acquire, use, and apply a growing bank of vocabulary, language skills and grammatical knowledge organised around age-appropriate topics and themes through a wide range of fun and engaging learning tasks including stories, songs and games.
Units are progressive within themselves, as subsequent lessons within a unit build on the language and knowledge taught in previous lessons. As pupils progress through the units, they build their knowledge and develop the complexity of the language they use.
