Our Worship Shepherds are a group of Year 6 pupils who play an important role in the spiritual life of our school. The children chose the name ‘Worship Shepherds’ themselves, linking it to our school vision and the parable of The Lost Sheep, reminding us that everyone is known, valued and cared for within our school community.

The Worship Shepherds help to plan, lead and support Collective Worship across the school. Through their role, they develop confidence, leadership, teamwork and communication skills while helping others to grow spiritually and morally.

Each Thursday, the Worship Shepherds lead class worship using Picture News, a resource which explores current events and news stories from around the world. These sessions encourage children to think deeply, ask questions and discuss topics linked to British Values, children’s rights, diversity and fairness. The children are encouraged to listen respectfully to different viewpoints and reflect on how they can make a positive difference in the world around them.

The Worship Shepherds also help to create reflective spaces, lead prayers, light candles during worship and support the respectful atmosphere that is central to our collective worship.

Here are some of their thoughts about their role:

“I enjoy helping people think about important things in worship.”

“I like working together to plan worship for the classes.”

“Leading worship helps me feel more confident.”

“I enjoy the reflection time because it helps everyone feel calm and thoughtful.”

“I like being able to bring people together through worship.”

“It feels special to help lead worship for the school.”
