What Music looks like at St. Laurence
We ensure all children have the opportunity to sing, compose, perform and learn about significant people from the world of music, both past and present. Through a progressive and enriching curriculum, children are empowered to develop a real appreciation and an understanding of a wide range of music.
Children are offered the opportunity to learn an instrument and perform during music lessons using the Charanga scheme. This allows students to perform and compose using instruments like glockenspiels, xylophones, recorders and ocarinas. This covers a broad range of music and genres including rock and pop, hip-hop and Motown. In Yeas 3 & 5, children have the opportunity to have dedicated ukulele lessons with a specialist music teacher once a week. For the second consecutive year, our Year 4 students will be taking part in the Young Voices concert at the O2 Arena in London. This is a wonderful experience for our children to enjoy and learn to perform and collaborate on a huge scale.
At St Laurence, we believe music can unlock the potential of students in all subjects and we offer a range of extra-curricular music activities and clubs such as Guitar Club and Choir, helping to teach children new skills and build confidence. We can also offer students individual instrument lessons.
Our school curriculum provides a supportive structure that enables all children to reach their full potential through a detailed progression of knowledge and skills. Through the engaging and hands-on musical activities, the children explore a range of instruments and musical styles. Throughout their time here, children will have the opportunity to learn at least one musical instrument. We instil a passion for music that will remain with the children throughout their lifelong learning experiences.
